About this blog

This blog is intended to showcase daily speedpaints - however, I don't intend to upload just any speedpaints. Instead, I want to try to sit down every day and paint a master study; be it Cézanne, Vermeer, Bouguereau or Rembrandt - I intend to study the works of these old masters and upload the results on this blog.
The purpose of this project is, obviously, personal improvement. First off, it'll motivate me to practice daily, which in itself will already help me improve, but more importantly I hope to learn a lot about colour theory, composition, styles, ductus and so on from these great people.

Please enjoy :)

[03.12.2010] David

Took me longer than just until Tuesday... haha (o^.^o)'

Sorry

Caravaggio - David with the Head of Goliath
I'll call this study finished now. There's still a lot to tweak and I could surely work out many more parts with more details^^ But well, neither will it get better, nor will it help me in any way ;)

Notice

Just apologizing for the lack of updates the last few days and showing that I'm still alive. Sadly, I won't be able to paint the coming days either cuz I'll be attending some kind of seminar-weekend organized by AFS concerning a year of doing social work overseas... in my case, Japan ;)
So yeah, no updates until Tuesday, probably :/

Have a nice weekend ^^

[22.11.2010] Evening Mood (close up)

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the last few days were filled with celebrations, visiting relatives ('twas my old man's hatchday) and me learning for a shitload of exams. Biology. Me likez, however preparing for written exams is always a bitch^^

So here's another Bouguereau, though 'tis just a close up of the face, not the whole pic. Didn't manage to do anything requiring more time and effort ;)

[20.11.2010] David with the Head of Goliath (Part 2)

Only had time to work on it a little today :)
Hopefully I'll get it done tomorrow, though I also need to learn for my biology exam. Hmmmm

[19.11.2010] David with the Head of Goliath (Part 1)

Instead of just rushing things, I decided to do this study over the course of several days. For now, I got the basics laid down (colour, lighting, shape...), and I think I'll be able to work with a lot more details thanks to taking more time - who would have thought! :]

Caravaggio - David with the Head of Goliath

Yeah, Caravaggio... seems I'm sticking to Baroque painters for now.

[18.11.2010] Sarah waiting for Tobias

Rembrandt today. Just a very quick sketch of the face, not the whole picture. Again, focused on light and shadow rather than form and accuracy^^

Rembrandt - Sarah waiting for Tobias
I should have more time during the weekend. Maybe I'll also split the painting process over more than just one day so I can work more on the studies ;)

[17.11.2010] Biblis

Next up is a piece by Bouguereau. I have to say, I _really_ love his art. But well, I have to say that of many other artists as well...
anyway, I managed to do another study today. I pretty much got it done in about an hour, so it's - again - rather sloppy. Have to find a way how I'll be able to paint and, at the same time, be able to examine the original closely. Second monitor, maybe? jk

Bouguereau - Biblis

Another possible option would be to just kind of stop doing a study of the whole pic but instead just focus on a certain detail. Or I could just work less rushed - however, today I wanted to make sure to get to bed earlier than yesterday, so sadly I couldn't do that :D (at least if I wanted to post something today)
Well, I'll figure it out someday^^

G'night

[16.11.2010] The first master...

is *insert dramatic music*
Vermeer
This picture was actually already painted yesterday... yesterday night. With bloodshot eyes I somehow managed to keep open, though I suppose it would have been better to just go to bed earlier.

Vermeer - The Girl with a Red Hat

Well, I don't really like this picture, I suppose it really shows how tired I was when I painted it. But still, it marks the beginning of this blog, and I guess it could be worse - for example, I could have screwed up the colours instead of just her facial expression :)

E: just realized... she looks like Frances Conroy ("Ruth Fisher" from Six Feet Under, for example)

Introductions

Hi everyone :)

Today I'm starting a new project which will _hopefully_ make me get off my arse and start drawing and painting somewhat daily. I think the description at the top of the page already pretty much tells everything about the blog, so I'm not gonna recap what this is all about^^
I hope you'll enjoy my daily updates :)
(and I reaaaaaally hope I'll manage to keep uploading something everyday for more than just one day :D Which kind of couldn't even really be considered daily. Wish me luck and endurance! ~(°A ° ~) )
